The is by far my favorite thing I’ve produced for Viz for Social Good. The World Resource Institute is a global research organization that spans more than 50 countries, with offices in the United States, China, India, Brazil, Indonesia and more. Their more than 700 experts and staff work closely with leaders to turn big ideas into action to sustain our natural resources—the foundation of economic opportunity and human well-being. Their work focuses on six critical issues at the intersection of environment and development: climate, energy, food, forests, water, and cities and transport.
They provided three different data sets, and I chose the one based around Carbon Footprints and the Carbon Budget.
Things I really like about the Viz.
- The color palette; Pacing the fiery colors on a black background, the highlighting in a grayish purple was really effective I think, and it made me think about pollution.
- The Red Line, which showed the threshold that we should avoid surpassing if we have hopes of controlling the global climate change trend.
- The Forecasting; I don’t get to use the forecasting feature in Tableau very often, but in this case I think it works really well and shows us that without effective change in our approach towards greenhouse gasses, we will see what could turn out to be catastrophic change.
